Information for schools

Vocational education and training (VET) in schools combines nationally recognised training with secondary education qualifications.

It enables high school students to gain practical work experience and nationally recognised qualifications as part of their education.

Schools wishing to offer VET courses must register to become a registered training organisation (RTO) through the relevant state or territory registering authority.

This involves:

  • complying to specific state or territory registration requirements
  • meeting Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) standards
  • defining the scope of registration - the particular training products and services to be delivered.

Once registered, the school will have a scope of registration to deliver VET to a certain level within a particular industry area.

Partnership arrangements

In some cases it is mutually beneficial for schools and RTOs to share the delivery of a VET course, particularly where the school does not have the necessary scope of registration or capabilities to deliver a particular qualification. For more information see Partner with an RTO on this site.
