A registered training organisation (RTO) is required to regularly report certain information to its state or territory training authority.

The range of information required includes the courses and subjects in which students are enrolled, their age and gender, and where training is occurring.

The information gathered is used at a national, state and territory level to:

• develop a picture of the vocational education and training sector in Australia
• inform policy decisions
• enable reporting of what has been achieved with public funds
• assist future planning.

AVETMISS

The data provided must conform to the Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information and Statistical Standard (AVETMISS).

AVETMISS ensures accurate and consistent vocational education and training (VET) measurements by providing a common language for the collection of data on training delivery. It enables comparison and analysis at all levels of the training system, nationally and within each state and territory.  AVETMISS data must be submitted annually.

Operating in more than one state or territory

There are different reporting requirements in each state and territory because each:

• may collect supplementary data along with AVETMISS information
• collects the data through different software programs or formats.

RTOs must supply reporting information to the training authority in each of  the state and territories in which they operate, in the various programs or formats requested.
