Delivering apprenticeships and traineeships

The methods by which registered training organisations (RTOs) provide training to an Australian Apprentice depends on the learning style of the individual, the needs of their employer and on the qualification sought.

Classroom delivery

Classroom delivery removes the Australian Apprentice from routine work duties to undertake training in a classroom environment. This can take place as block release or day release at the RTO's premises, in a classroom environment at the business premises, or other training venue.

Flexible delivery

Flexible delivery allows the Australian Apprentice to undertake training using distance, correspondence, online or Internet training, combined with instruction delivered using face-to-face, video link or teleconferencing methods.

Work-based delivery

Work-based delivery allows the Australian Apprentice to develop the knowledge and skills required as part of normal work. The employer delivers training in the workplace with the RTO providing guidance and support.

Training plans

A training plan is a document outlining the skills or competencies an Australian Apprentice should develop during his or her training.

It specifies:

  • the on-the-job training to be delivered by the employer
  • the off-the-job training to be delivered by the RTO.

An RTO is required to work with an Australian Apprentice and their employer to define how the training will be delivered as part of the Training Plan.

The training contract must specify the Australian Apprenticeship and the level of qualification to be achieved by your Australian Apprentice. You will therefore need to submit a training plan endorsed by your training provider that details both the on and off-the-job training that the Australian Apprentice must receive.
