Apprenticeships and traineeships are now called Australian Apprenticeships. They allow people to combine work with structured off-the-job training.
Apprenticeships were traditionally focused on established trades, and training took at least three years to complete. Traineeships, by comparison, covered a much wider range of occupations and the training was generally shorter, lasting between one and two years.
Although some states and territories still refer to apprenticeships and traineeships, the distinction between the two has blurred over the last decade.
Australian Apprenticeships offer tremendous flexibility for businesses. They are available in more than 500 occupations nationally, and employers can choose from various on and off-the-job training options including:
-
the timing of the training
-
the location of the training
-
how the training is delivered, ie in a classroom, by distance or online
-
the preferred training provider.
In order to target training to your specific business needs, there are numerous types of Australian Apprenticeships that can be implemented:
-
School-based Australian Apprenticeships allow students in high school to complete their schooling while starting an apprenticeship.
-
Full-time Australian Apprenticeships combines on-the-job training and work with off-the-job training at a training provider.
-
Part-time Australian Apprenticeships are suitable for employers who only require a part-time New Apprentice.
Existing staff may also enter a Australian Apprenticeship. An existing worker is defined as an employee who has been with your business for more than three months full-time, or 12 months part-time or casual.
To make it easier for businesses to get involved with Australian Apprenticeships, the Australian, state and territory governments provide funding and other forms of financial assistance to assist employers of Australian Apprentices.
If you are not able to commit to a full-time Australian Apprentice, you can become a 'host employer' through a Group Training Organisation.
