Filling the gaps

Registered training organisations (RTOs) need to have a clear understanding of the emerging training needs of clients and align their skills and capabilities accordingly.

RTOs need to recognise their staff's strengths and weaknesses, including their skill levels, in order to develop a plan to overcome shortfalls and address any gaps.

There are a number of ways to achieve this:

professional development of RTO staff

incorporate the latest technology into training delivery

partner with other RTOs.

Professional development

The skills and knowledge of teachers, trainers and assessors are crucial to delivering quality learning outcomes. The Australian Government supports a number of national staff development programs designed to meet the learning needs of the vocational education and training (VET) workforce and support VET professionalism.

Reframing the Future is a national staff development and change management initiative funded through the Australian Government. It aims to enable Australian industry to thrive in the local and global economy by assisting:

  • RTO staff to become highly skilled
  • RTOs to become high performing.

The Australian Flexible Learning Framework recognises the crucial role practitioners play in bringing about changes in education and offers a number of resources and programs which support teachers interested in incorporating e-learning into their teaching.

Incorporating new technology

With the rapid advances in technology, RTOs need to stay ahead of the developments of product training delivery techniques that utilise the latest technology.  LearnScope funds work-based learning projects to help RTOs develop the attitudes, skills and capabilities to apply and integrate new technologies to the delivery of training.

Partnering with other RTOs

It may make sense for an RTO to outsource new training delivery modes that it cannot perform as profitably or as competently as another. By partnering, the RTOs can share expertise, competencies and best practice, while at the same time reducing costs by:· using the distinctive capacities of the other partner· bringing together different technologies and approaches to develop better products and services.
