Customising a course

Registered training organisations (RTOs) can customise an accredited course in order to meet the specific needs of the client.

Accredited courses are designed to be flexible and allow for elective units of competency. This enables an RTO to customise a course by adding, deleting, substituting or modifying the units of competency on which the course is based.

Course rules

Any customisation of an accredited course must be within the course rules. They set out the limits to customisation of the course by identifying:

  • the units of competency which are essential to the completion of the qualification
  • possible sources of alternative units of competency which may be substituted or added without further endorsement
  • the type and number of units of competency which may be added or substituted without affecting the overall integrity of the qualification
  • the extent to which units of competency may be modified without affecting the overall integrity of the course, units or qualification.

If the course needs to be changed to a level beyond these rules it will require separate accreditation. If in doubt whether the proposed customisation goes beyond what is provided for in the course rules, an RTO should check with the course copyright owner.

Compulsory training

Not all training can be tailored. Compulsory training in specific competencies is required by some industries and professions.

In these cases, there may still be scope to combine compulsory units with some elective units to create a qualification to satisfy industry requirements while delivering a broader range of skills to the student.
