Recruiting an Apprentice/Trainee

Recruiting

Before you start the recruitment process, be sure that your business is ready to take on an Australian Apprentice. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Has my business reached a stage of growth to support a new employee with little or no experience?
  • If so, what type of employee do I need?
  • How much can I afford to pay?
  • What position do I need to fill to address my business needs?
  • What level of skills and experience do I expect the Australian Apprentice to attain by the end of their training?

Once you have determined the type of position you want filled and the skills required there are a number of ways to find an Australian Apprentice.

  • Australian Apprenticeships Centres >>
Australian Apprenticeships Centres (formerly New Apprenticeships Centres) are contracted by the Australian Government to provide one-stop shops for those seeking to hire Australian Apprentices or to take up an Australian Apprenticeship as a career path.
  • Recruit an Apprentice / Trainee yourself >>
Recruiting an Australian Apprentice is as easy as recruiting any other employee. Using your normal hiring procedure is one way but there are a number of other options too.
  • Existing employees >>
By training existing staff in an Australian Apprenticeship you are not only investing in someone that you already know and trust, but also giving your staff the opportunity to learn new skills while attracting possible Australian government funding and incentives.
  • Group Training Organisations >>
Don't have the time or resources to recruit an Australian Apprentice? Find out about Group Training Organisations.
  • Negotiating the training plan >>
The training contract must specify the Australian Apprenticeship and the level of qualification to be achieved by your Australian Apprentice. You will therefore need to submit a training plan endorsed by your training provider that details both the on and off-the-job training that the Australian Apprentice must receive.
  • Training contract/agreement >>
The Apprenticeship/Traineeship training contract is a legally binding agreement between you and your Australian Apprentice, protecting you both and outlining obligations.
