The National Code of Good Practice for Australian Apprenticeships was developed to assist you and your Australian Apprentice to understand each other's obligations and expectations under the Australian Apprenticeship/Traineeship Training Contract.
The Code outlines that both parties must enter into the arrangement with a commitment to mutual respect, honesty and fairness.
It requires you and your Australian Apprentice to determine the qualification and the competencies the Australian Apprentice is working to attain.
It also ensures you both understand the avenues for dispute resolution and what is required to terminate the Training Contract.
Under the Code, you are required to:
-
meet your legal obligations under the relevant Australian state or territory Government legislation
-
provide a safe working environment free from verbal, physical, racial and sexual abuse
-
ensure all occupational health and safety requirements are addressed and communicated to your Australian Apprentice
-
support structured training by providing opportunities to develop knowledge and skills
provide supervision and support
fulfil your record-keeping and reporting requirements
-
advise your Australian Apprentices of their rights and responsibilities.
The Code also details what is required of the Australian Apprentice. The Australian Apprentice must be aware of and make a commitment to fulfill both the work and training responsibilities.
Both you and your Australian Apprentice should read and keep a copy of the Code. Download a copy of the National Code of Good Practice for Australian Apprenticeships (pdf 160Kb), prior to signing the Training Contract.
