RTOs share flexible learning experience

Last year 18 registered training organisations (RTOs) across Australia were selected to "test-drive" products and services developed under the Australian Flexible Learning Framework (AFLF).

The RTOs have documented their experiences and these are now available online.

Queensland RTO Yellow Cabs

Queensland RTO Yellow Cabs used flexible learning resources to develop an operator accreditation course to improve its business capacity.

Yellow Cabs project manager Marty Ord said Yellow Cabs Qld is a private enterprise that likes to think "outside the square".

"When Yellow Cabs Qld first looked at the idea of flexible learning we saw an opportunity to provide an online course, not only for our own taxi operators, but for taxi operators in remote areas," Mr Ord said.

With around 1,000 cabs and close to 4,000 permanent and casual drivers, Yellow Cabs used three Australian Flexible Learning Framework products.

The Flexible Delivery Business Planning Framework helped them with strategic planning, FlexWays, a web-based professional development tool, helped design and structure the course and the Staff Capability Review Approaches identified staff skill capabilities in delivering training.

Mr Ord said the course set a benchmark for course content and created an opportunity to influence and enhance the quality and professionalism of the taxi industry overall.

"The course offers information targeted at the passive investor and licensed owner-operators, along with offering a career path for present and future drivers," he said.

Project manager for national promotion and communication of the Australian Flexible Learning Framework Lindy Smith said the case studies showed how flexible learning practices helped RTOs improve their bottom line by becoming more client-focused.

"The products and services will help providers answer questions such as; Is flexible learning viable for my organisation? Are we providing flexible learning options to fit in with our clients' work and life commitments? Do we have the staff capability to deliver training programs using interactive multi-media applications? And how do I develop a strategic business plan that integrates flexible learning practices?."

The Australian Flexible Learning Framework also provides funding to RTOs for individual and team-based professional development.
