What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a type of massage that focuses on the hands and feet, founded on the principle that both possess reflex points that align with various areas of the nervous system.

It is considered a form of complementary therapy or alternative medicine which promotes wellness, though keep in mind that reflexologists are not doctors and cannot treat health conditions. They are there to help their clients reduce stress and provide them with a pleasant sensation. For that reason, it is best that clients contact their GP before they engage in reflexology

As a reflexologist, you’ll be applying pressure to specific areas of the body, also known as pressure points, to relax the muscles. This requires patience, as well as having compassion for the client’s health issues and being respectful of their personal boundaries. Many of the skills you’ll need to have are similar to massage therapists, like a calming demeanour and establishing a strong rapport with the client.

However, it should be made clear that the two roles are very much different from each other: a massage therapist typically needs creams, lotions and oils, while a reflexologist doesn’t, often being able to take their skills anywhere and having more of a focus on holistic well-being.

Reflexology career outcomes

While educating yourself in reflexology typically leads to that one particular career path, there are other routes in alternative medicine that you can look into if you’d like, such as:

  • Aromatherapist
  • Acupuncturist
  • Kinesiologist
  • Herbalist
