Who's It For?

  • Those who are passionate about the importance of quality education for all children, and
  • Those who have some experience in a classroom or working with students, or
  • Students undertaking an education-related degree, such as Primary Teaching, Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education, Bachelor of Education, or similar and looking for relevant skills and experience, or

Duration and Study Load

  • Class-based: Three school terms or about 9 months, but you may extend if you are still completing your placement or assessments, or want to attend study support sessions.
  • Blended/Online: 6 months up to 18 months, you may work through the required units of this program with the option to extend for a further six months if required.

Delivery

This course is offered with the flexibility of either class-based weekly sessions or as blended online/distance learning.

Class-based

  • Currently offered in Victoria at multiple locations, you will attend a weekly class once per week delivered during school time, usually, 10 am to 2 pm, so you can fit in the study with your other commitments.
  • Share your placement experiences in group discussions and be guided by our expert facilitators.
    Locations include Carnegie (Mondays), Clyde North (Tuesdays), Melton (Mondays or Fridays) and more.

Blended online/distance

  • This approach to learning enables you to study at your own pace, whenever and however it suits you.
  • We will supply you with a set of resources for the course enabling you to get started as soon as your enrolment is confirmed.
  • Our qualified and experienced training team will provide full support with monthly monitoring of your progress and frequent feedback.

Entry Requirements

  • There are no specific entry requirements, however, to gain maximum benefit, you will need to be able to speak, read and write fluently in English, as well as have basic computer and internet skills and reliable access.
  • It is recommended that applicants have completed at least a Year 11 secondary school level.
  • All applicants will be required to undertake a pre-training review, including an evaluation of existing language, literacy and numeracy skills.

Work Placement

  • You must also complete 100 hours of placement in one or more registered schools. We recommend you approach your local primary, secondary or specialist educational schools for placement.

Recognition of Prior Learning

  • If you have already completed units in prior study, such as from the CHC30213 Certificate III in Education Support, CHC40213 Certificate IV in Education Support, or a similar program, you can apply for RPL or credit transfer which may reduce your study time and fees.

Assessment

  • Assessment tasks are practical and oriented to the work or placement context for relevance.
  • They consist of a variety of tasks requiring the ability to research, analyse and present your responses in written form, including reports and practical demonstrations.
  • Feedback on the completion of tasks is given as you progress through the course.
  • Your placement supervisor will also be asked to provide third party reports on your progress and feedback on your overall placement performance.

Materials

  • Class-based students: You will receive the textbook in your first sessions and comprehensive resources from your facilitator at each weekly session.
  • Blended online/distance students: You will receive the first set of learning resources once your enrolment is confirmed, enabling you to get started. These comprehensive resources will support your learning throughout your course and become an excellent point of reference for your future career.

Pathways

On completion of this qualification:

  • You can take your studies further with higher education courses in education or support sectors.
  • You may also be interested in CHC43115 Certificate IV in Disability, CHC43415 Certificate IV in Leisure and Health, CHC43315 Certificate IV in Mental Health CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care.

Special Note

  • There are requirements for working and learning in the education sector that all applicants should be aware of prior to enrolment. As you must complete a placement in a registered school, you will be required to undergo a Working With Children check, as well as a National Police Check.
  • Please consider this information carefully prior to enrolment to ensure you will be eligible to fulfil these requirements, as Phillips Institute cannot be held responsible for the inability of any student to meet their practical placement assessment requirements which are a non-negotiable component of this program.
