Victorian State Budget to Splash 10 More Free TAFE Courses
By now, we’ve all heard the news that the Vic Government are going to make TAFE courses free for victorian residents, but what exactly is the opinion about using taxpayer money towards this?
Training.com.au conducted a survey which shows that 66% of VIC residents support the decision to provide free TAFE courses. So what do these results tell us exactly?

What Does the Survey Tell Us?
The simple survey was conducted by Training.com.au in response to MP Daniel Andrews announcement that Victorians will receive vital TAFE courses free in 2018.
The changes will mean that from 2019 onwards, 50 TAFE courses, pre-apprenticeships and apprenticeships will be free to Victorian residents, but at a cost to taxpayers.
The survey gives us a great insight into how Victorians feel about the change and whether they believe it’s important for the state’s future development. The chosen free TAFE courses were based on areas of ‘high priority’ in the future, including trades, disability and aged care and community services. This will open 30,000 free TAFE spots for students, with another 10 TAFE courses that will be under the free scheme yet to be announced.
Who We Surveyed
Women Are More in Favour of Free TAFE Courses
One of the more interesting results of the Free TAFE survey was the high percentage of women who preferred the scheme over men. Out of all the respondents, 72% of women supported Mr Andrews’ free TAFE decision compared to 60% of men.

Age Plays an Important Factor on Support for the free TAFE Scheme
Interestingly a whopping 81.4% of women between the ages of 35-44 supported this decision, over the 74.4% in 25-34 age bracket.
Comparatively men felt differently about the decision with 46% of those between the ages of 35-44 believing this was not a good use of taxpayer money.
The survey responses reflect the growing labour force participation in women which was 65.1% in 2015 vs 78.3% for men.
Survey Respondents in Favour of free TAFE Courses at a Cost to Taxpayers
Of all respondents aged 25-34 were in favour of the change; the highest of all age groups.
Of all respondents aged 65 and over approved of this change, the lowest percentile compared to all other age groups.
10 TAFE Courses Yet to Be Announced
With 10 free courses yet to be announced in the upcoming months, we’ve done some research to determine what they might be. According to the Australian Government’s Victorian Skills Shortage Research Reports, almost all of the courses listed by Andrews were said to have a ‘state-wide shortage’. Also on this list, however not. So, if your area of interest or specific qualification did not appear on the first free TAFE and pre-apprenticeship list, there may still be a good chance that it appears in the second. Based on the Government’s data and our own, these are the courses we predict will add to the list of free TAFE courses for Victorians.
