Some of the highest-paying jobs in Australia are the ones that don’t require a university degree, according to Today.
In a recent interview, CEO of Group Training Australia Jim Barron said, “We give the wrong advice to students before they think about their career choice.
“There should be a large sign outside of a lot of universities saying ‘Wrong Way, Go Back’.”
According to the interview, trade jobs like truck driving, electrical work and construction have the potential to be as lucrative as their degree counterparts, with salaries well over $100 000. Here are the average salaries, according to Today:
- Truck drivers: $73 000
- Auto electricians: $91 572
- General electricians: $100 932
- Construction workers: $113 776
In the interview, Barron stressed the need to present vocational education as a viable alternative to university, instead of pushing students towards higher education by default.
He said that trade jobs were in high demand in industries like mining, oil and gas and the Defense Force.
