The Real Estate Industry

A career in real estate is a busy (but rewarding) one. If you’re looking for job security, you can rest easy knowing that real estate agent careers are projected to grow by 9.5%.

Most people working in real estate work full-time (80%), however, the independent nature of this industry allows for part-time work as well. Real estate’s demographic is diverse, with people of all ages making up the current workforce and an even split between female and male employees.

The average salary in a real estate profession is hard to define, as most people’s salary mostly consists of commission. How much commission an agent gets per sale depends on a number of factors, including:

  • If they run their own real estate business
  • If they work for a real estate agency
  • Which suburbs they work within (and the value of the properties they’re selling)
  • What they’ve negotiated with their client, per sale

An agent’s commission can sit anywhere from 1%-5% in Australia, with the average usually sitting around 2.3%. More experienced senior real estate agents are usually able to negotiate higher.
