Exploration Units

Exploration units offer the chance to explore various art and design fields beyond your focus, enhancing skills and understanding of the creative industry. These units help develop new perspectives and problem-solving skills to expand your portfolio, increasing employability.

Design Laboratory Workshops

LCI Melbourne’s design laboratories offer the space and support to apply research, knowledge and skills. These units are where you innovate creative solutions in your chosen major. Academic mentors use lectures, tutorials and technical demonstrations to help you master concepts during designated design laboratory time.

Contextual Units

Contextual units introduce theoretical knowledge and encourage you to relate your work to real-world issues. This approach helps to develop critical thinking, creativity and effective communication skills, for success in creative industries.

Professional Practice

Professional practice units benefit emerging artists and designers by providing access to industry professionals, offering real-world experiences and fostering communication and entrepreneurial skills. These units aim to prepare you for a successful career in creative industries by enhancing business and employability skills, industry connections and readiness for diverse challenges.

Duration study load

With three 12-week teaching periods each year, our accelerated trimester model lets you complete your degree in just two years, helping you graduate faster and begin your creative career with confidence.

Delivery

Our courses are delivered in-person at our light-filled campus in Collingwood. Each trimester is themed to build up your photography and filmmaking practice, so whether you are starting as a beginner or have dabbled in creativity, we will work with you to build up your skills.

Entry requirements

For entry into the course, students must:

  • Satisfactorily complete Australian Year 12, or an equivalent qualification.

  • Complete an Admission Consultation

ATAR scores are not used in the consideration of your application. Unscored VCE and VCE VM (or equivalent) are accepted for entry.

Students must be 18+ years of age at the commencement of the course.

Course features

This accelerated course offers real-world, hands-on experience from day one. More than half of the units take place in a studio environment, allowing you to create alongside experienced mentors for the majority of your studies.

Work placement

In their fifth trimester, students will have the opportunity to complete a professional work placement of up to 70 hours. This Professional Placement enhances practical design education by providing real-world industry experience, with access to a range of partner opportunities to support student learning. Students have also had a range of other informal work experience opportunities, including to work with our partner Football Australia.

Assessment

Assessments vary but will include presentations, portfolios, essays and case studies. There are no formal exams as part of the course.

Materials

A list of required materials (e.g., for planning and production) is provided at the beginning of each trimester. Any additional standard or student-licensed software required will be requested by mentors.

Learners are responsible for organising and purchasing materials for final designs. Additional materials include:

  • Digital device (Mac, PC, tablet)

  • External hard drive (Mac/PC Compatible - 2T recommended)

  • Adobe Creative Cloud Suite

  • Microsoft Office Suite (or equivalent)

  • Any standard or student-licensed software requested by mentors

  • Digital DSLR or Mirrorless Camera

  • Flash Drive

  • Flash Card

  • SD Cards

  • Tripod

Additional information

A Filmmaking and Photography degree prepares you for a wide range of creative careers in visual storytelling and media production. The program develops strong technical, conceptual, and creative skills, enabling you to excel in film, television, advertising, digital media, and content creation—or establish your own freelance practice within the dynamic screen and photography industries.

Payment options

LCI Melbourne is an Australian Government-accredited Institute of Higher Education providing Australian Domestic students with access to FEE-HELP. FEE-HELP is a loan scheme that assists eligible students to pay tuition fees. Alternatively, students can pay their fees upfront each trimester.

Bachelor of Business and Innovation

This course is designed to equip aspiring creative professionals with the essential skills, attitudes and knowledge to harness the commercial potential within creative industries, or to ensure the best commercial use of their own creative talents. The course emphasises a blend of business and management studies, grounded in contemporary industry practices with a focus on the creative economy. It also provides the opportunity for you to build and develop your own business while you study, applying what you learn in real time to your own creative venture.

Diploma of Fashion Design 

Ignite your passion for fashion and make your mark as a design professional. Cultivate your creativity, technical expertise, and vision with the support of experienced mentors. Bring your concepts to life as you develop a fashion collection, mastering fabric handling, manufacturing, branding, and distribution.

Diploma of Graphic Design 

Immerse yourself in the vibrant world of graphic design where you’ll master digital design, typography, branding, and packaging. From ideation to prototyping, develop your skills and create impactful designs using cutting-edge software. Find your unique creative voice and thrive in the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary graphic design.
