Human resources is a broad industry, with many levels of management and personnel who work in a number of areas. The typical Human Resources Management salary in Australia, according to Job Outlook is $91,000, whereas HR clerks who have less experience can earn around $57,000 per year.

If you are looking to make a move in this exciting, people-focused industry, you’re in luck. According to Job Outlook, the number of managers in HR will grow by 5.9% by 2019, and 7.7% for other human resource clerks and assistants.

Another interesting statistic is the common level of qualification is a Diploma level or above, with many going on to further their studies in Bachelor Degrees, especially for managers. This industry also employers a higher level of females, with almost the entire sector working full-time hours.

Human Resource professionals deal largely with managing and coordinating teams of employees, and as such, require a specific skill set that allows them to understand, empathise and motivate people in the workplace.

Types of Human Resources Courses

Certificate

The Certificate IV in Human Resources is a TAFE qualification designed to introduce you to the fundamentals of this area. You’ll pick up skills is in management, recruiting, employee relations and performance management. A Certificate can usually take up to a year to complete, however, if you study online, this can be done faster depending on how you structure your study. Many Certificate courses focus on managing and supervising employees throughout the stages of the employment cycle, from recruitment, training and performance assessment.

Diploma

Take your expertise and knowledge one step further with a Diploma of Human Resources Management. This nationally recognised course will explore all areas of HR in detail, to make sure you are fully prepared for the real world. A diploma is more technical than a certificate, with more of a focus on human resource strategies in a business context including policy and training procedures in the workplace. There are many Diplomas in the country that also offer Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) which can help you fastrack your study if you’re looking to upskill on existing qualifications or experience.

Bachelor Degree

A Bachelor Degree is a comprehensive qualification that will prepare you for everything you can expect in a human resource management position, in a small business through to a global organisation. A Bachelor of Human Resource Management, for instance, can take around three-years full-time to complete but is essential in developing your skills and knowledge in all areas of HR. A Bachelor degree usually focuses on developing strategies, policies and practical ways to manage human needs in the workplace.

Postgraduate

Postgraduate courses in Human Resources can include Graduate Certificates and Master Level Qualifications. If you’re considering applying for a postgraduate course, it isn’t necessarily essential to have completed a related degree to gain entry. In many instances, you can gain entry through your work experience. Post graduate course covers topics extensively and can take anywhere between six months and four years to complete.
