Types of Counselling Courses

Tertiary qualifications in counselling are vital for a successful career in the industry. Those starting out and with no prior experience have the opportunity to gain the desired skills through TAFE courses such as a Diploma. There are also Bachelors and Certificate options designed to advance the skills of those already working within the field.

Certificate IV

There are a range of Certificate IV courses designed to provide specialised training for those looking to advance their careers and practice in particular areas such as youth work practice, life coaching, advocacy, and planning. These certificate courses provide you with the training to establish practices, create business plans, identify target clientele and build marketing strategies. These online courses in counselling are open-entry, with no previous academic qualifications required.

Diploma

A Diploma in Counselling can be the ideal first step for those wanting to embark on a career in the industry. It’s also a valuable TAFE course for those professionals who use the skills of counsellors in their existing role, yet have a desire for formal training. The online course can provide the career outcomes of counsellor, family support services, and government support services, or within community organisations.

Undergraduate

A Bachelor qualification in counselling provides entry-level counselling training for those looking to advance their careers. Completion of a Certificate IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree is a requirement of entry into this course. An undergraduate counselling degree enables graduates to work as a registered counselling professionals and own their own practice or work in within community, government or private organisations.

Is counselling right for you?

A career in counselling can allow you to help others who are in emotional need and require support to overcome their issues. Your role as a counsellor can be exciting and meaningful in not only your life, but also in another person’s life.

Counselling can be an appropriate choice for those commencing a career for the first time, re-entering the workforce later in life or wanting a total change in career. The industry is diverse enough and with several possibilities, you can focus on a particular interest within the counselling field.

Counselling does require a particular element of strength, as it can be taxing to listen to people’s problems and help guide them to make better choices to improve their emotional wellbeing. You will require the character to take on the client’s issues without allowing them to drain your energy and impact on your own personal life. Common problems you will face as a counsellor include relationship difficulties, grief, anxiety, depression and substance abuse.

Usually working short-term with clients, as a counsellor you will have the ability to help people develop strategies for coping, increase their self-awareness, clarify and resolve issues as well as explore their options. With this in mind, a career in counselling can be extremely satisfying as you are a key component in people changing their lives for the better.
