About Interior Design

Unlock your creativity and explore new career paths with our Interior Design Courses. From designing beautiful homes to corporate design work, our courses can help you become an in-demand expert in the industry.

As an interior designer, you’ll have the opportunity to work on sustainable designs, retail stores, art galleries, luxury hotel interiors, and more.

Our online courses will give you the flexibility to learn at your own pace and develop your skills with a focus on technical and creative interior designer skills.

A day in the life of a interior designer

At 9am, begin the morning by looking at the newest trends in textile patterns, designs, furniture designs and accessories. Afterward, welcome your first customer of the day. Go over the client’s needs for design, key furniture items, colour schemes and fabrics.

At 12 pm, meet a new client who wants a proposal. Provide your fabric and colour boards, catalogues, and make a rough plan of the new development design. The client decides colours and accessories and leaves you to place the orders according to their budget needs

5 pm – Back to the Office to place more orders for furniture, fabrics, and accessories for upcoming proposal designs.

Does this sound like an attractive work day? Are you ambitious and business-minded? Are you good at interacting with people? If you love playing with colours, rearranging rooms, meeting new clients, you can make this an enjoyable and rewarding new career.

Key responsibilities and skills of an interior designer

As an interior designer, you must have a good understanding of building laws and regulations, local government policies, and building codes.

You should be able to interact with clients and understand their needs while providing excellent customer service.

Interior design also isn’t just all about fabrics and colours. There are many other required skills for the role that most don’t consider.

Psychology, spatial concepts, structural integrity, ethics, building codes and local government laws are all part of your job. Additionally, you must also understand computer-aided drawings (CAD).

Key skills:

  • Good spatial awareness
  • Eye for detail and style
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Understand clients needs and interact with them on a daily basis
  • Aware and up to date with building laws

Technology is increasingly important for all careers. One option to consider is an online path as a virtual interior designer.

Career tips when working as an interior designer

  1. Be a people person! A major part of your work day will be dealing with clients and completing the job to their deadline and requirements. You’ll need great people skills, a pleasant or positive attitude and personality, and good sales skills to sell your services.
  2. Have a good knowledge of colour schemes. Know what colours complement each other, what colours are trending and what fabrics suit the décor.
  3. Stay up to date with current trends in furniture and themed room design. Know what’s popular and know your client and what they are looking for before drafting up proposals.
  4. Keep and maintain a current and extensive portfolio of your work. It’s a great starting block for interior designers to gain their first clients.

Interior design courses for your career

There are many education providers in Australia currently offering interior design courses to become a qualified interior designer. Both online and on-campus study methods are available for greater accessibility and flexibility.

Some current courses available to choose from:

Certificate

Certificate courses in interior design usually last two years. They provide the basic skills and knowledge needed to succeed in interior design. This enables you to build a successful career in this field.

Learn how to produce perspective drawings, respond to client briefs, and read building plans. Also learn legal and administrative processes and legalities relevant to running your own successful small business venture in interior design.

Diploma

If you’re after a flexible online diploma, there’s plenty available across the country. Diploma of interior design courses can take up to two and a half years to finish. However, you can complete it faster, depending on your study habits.

These courses are ideal for honing and improving technical and creative interior design skills. They focus on interior space planning, heritage site considerations, and environmentally sustainable practices.

You’ll end the course with an extensive portfolio to complement your new career.

Bachelor Degree

A Bachelor of Interior Design offers a three-year course. It covers all aspects of interior design, with a strong focus on media and print industry skills. This enables you to create virtual and physical designs.

Ideal for virtual interior design roles, this skill set is invaluable. It includes relevant and crucial skills such as responding to client briefs and dealing with clients face to face. Also get the opportunity to commence creation of your interior design portfolio.

Enquire on an interior design course today

To have a successful career in interior design, creativity is a must. You must be confident when communicating with clients, contractors and vendors. Maintain a balance between being friendly and accommodating to clients’ needs, but at the same time, keep a strict timeline and budget for the design project. It’s your responsibility to make sure that the client’s vision is achieved while adhering to their specifications and preferences.

Some may think that interior design and decoration is simply about decorating rooms. But it involves a lot of planning, research, and coordination with various stakeholders. Usually, you’re juggling different tasks and deadlines at once, and this is where you have to multitask. So keeping cool under pressure is an essential skill set for the job.

Having the best training and skill sets is essential for success in any career. These assets will help you achieve your career goals. Keen on studying an interior design course? Enquire today for the best kick start towards your career.
