Are you a handy type looking for a job that is well-paid, highly respected, and extremely gratifying? If so, a career in carpentry may be the perfect fit for you. Here we will look at what this fun, challenging, and creative profession is all about.

What is Carpentry?

Carpentry is the art of making things from wood, which can include constructing, erecting, installing, renovating, and repairing a wide range of structures. Carpenters cut, work, and join timber; they build frames, decks, and flooring; and can make anything from cabinets and countertops to furniture, formwork, and molding.

Carpentry jobs

The following are just some of the many carpentry-related jobs available:

  • Lead Carpenter
  • Finish Carpenter
  • Trim Carpenter
  • Joiner
  • Boat Builder
  • Woodworker

Carpentry in Australia

There are currently around 117,600 Carpenters and Joiners employed throughout Australia, almost all of who work full time and 98.7% are men. Many of Australia’s carpentry professionals get their start via apprenticeship programs, which include a mix of in-class and on-the-job training that can take up to 4 years to complete.

While some Carpenters choose to work for themselves on a contract basis, most are employed by building, renovation, or shop fitting companies. Carpentry work typically takes place from 7am until 3pm, Monday to Friday; however, long days and weekend work are also common, especially for those who are self-employed or working in the private sector.

The rate of pay varies widely depending upon your role and level of experience; for example, an Apprentice Carpenter in Australia makes an average of $46,997 P/A, while a fully qualified Carpenter can make upwards of $90,000 P/A.

Getting trained up

Whether you have your heart set on a carpentry career or just want to take your handy-person skills to the next level this year, investing in a quality training program is a savvy move, and you won’t find a better range of carpentry courses than right here at training.com.au.

A great way to get started is by investing in a certificate level course, as they will often be considered mandatory carpentry pre apprenticeship requirements. Here you will learn about the core fundamentals of building and construction, ranging from occupational health and safety to zoning laws and the theory behind structural integrity, all while seriously enhancing your skills at working with tools and equipment. Best of all, these short carpentry courses provide a direct pathway into a wide range of entry-level roles as well as higher level learning opportunities, and will earn you a carpentry certification that is recognised nation-wide.

Those looking to advance beyond entry-level roles will be well served by a diploma, because these comprehensive carpentry training courses delve deeper into both the theory and practice behind this age-old craft. Aside from seriously improving your woodworking skills, you’ll learn how to identify and monitor building costs, apply quality standards, as well as recruit and manage contractors, not to mention dramatically improve your professional communication abilities. Most TAFE carpentry diplomas can be completed in less than 12 months and will prepare you for roles such as Builder, Site Manager, and Foreperson.

Whether you are dreaming of a woodworking apprenticeship in Brisbane, have your eye on furniture making courses in Perth, or are searching for the best carpentry pre-apprenticeship courses in Melbourne, you’ll find a training program to suit your wants and needs here at training.com.au.

Future prospects

According to the latest Australian government data, Carpenters, Joiners, and Cabinet Makers can all expect stable employment growth for at least the next 5 years, which means plenty of opportunities for up-and-coming professionals, like you.

Furthermore, a recent study by employment giant Indeed found that carpentry positions are currently among the hardest to fill – with 40% of carpentry jobs advertised remaining unfilled 60 days after being posted – therefore, the sooner you get trained up, the better.

Is a career in Carpentry right for you?

To enjoy a successful career in carpentry you need to be fit, strong, and good with your hands, not to mention have an eye for detail, a knack for numbers, and the ability to work well with others. The following skills and talents will also certainly help;

  • Good time management
  • A strong work ethic
  • The ability to work independently
  • Clear communication
  • A steady hand
  • High-level customer service

Are you ready to take your handyperson skills to the next level this year, or perhaps even embark on a carpentry career? If so, consider this your cue to make a move, and you are sure to find a carpentry course at TAFE, college, or university to meet your needs, advertised here with us.
