What is a Certificate III course?
A Certificate III course is a form of further education that aims to provide students with practical, real-world skills specific to the industry they’re studying. Certificate IIIs don’t include a work placement but try and create work-ready employees who can be employed safely with a solid understanding of the job and industry they’re entering. Generally, Certificate IIIs are taught through TAFE or another registered training organisation. (RTO) A Certificate III allows for students to complete further study, including a Certificate IV and further.
Generally, a course will contain several core units and elective units. A core unit has to be completed and may be taught across a range of courses. For example, Communicate and Work in Health or Community Services (CHCCOM005) or Follow Safe Work Practices for Direct Client Care (HLTWHS002) may be taught across a range of community care courses including aged care, personal care, nursing and more. Meanwhile, more specific units would be taught as electives or in further study units, for those who want to work in one particular area of the industry, such as in disability courses or specialisations.
Industries that may need workers with at least a Certificate III qualification include:
- Aged care and other care services
- IT and information systems
- Australian healthcare and support services
- Project management
And many more.
How to study a Certificate III
Whether you’re interested in becoming a care worker, support worker, project manager or business administrator, a Certificate III in the relevant industry can help you get started, and can be taught in a variety of ways.
Online learning means that even if you want to study a course taught at an RTO from Melbourne or Perth, you may be able to do so from your home in Adelaide. Equally, if you’re interested in a course taught elsewhere in South Australia, you may be able to study online or part-time so that if the course does require face-to-face learning, you can do so without having to travel too far or too often.
Entry requirements for courses vary, but for Certificate IIIs they tend to focus on basic literacy and numeracy requirements. Aged care courses, courses that require you to work with diverse people, and many others may also offer recognition of prior learning (RPL), so if you’ve already worked in the industry or completed previous training the entry requirements may take that into account. For example, if you didn’t graduate high school but have been working in the aged care industry for a few years, the Certificate III in Individual Support may be perfect for you. Institutions can recognise your previous experience as being more important than having completed year 12.
