Course overview

This qualification reflects the role of workers in out-of-home care, child protection and family support settings. Workers operate under limited supervision or as part of a team and are responsible for planning and prioritising their own work to achieve identified outcomes. Depending on the focus of their role, they may supervise other workers and undertake activities aimed at improving the personal, social and emotional circumstances of children and young people who may be at risk.

Our Diploma incorporates Neurodevelopmental, Attachment and Trauma-Informed (NATI) principles, providing a unique and contemporary approach to child, youth and family work. These principles are embedded throughout the Diploma subjects to enhance the core qualification content and strengthen learners’ understanding of how development, attachment and experiences of trauma can influence behaviour, relationships and emotional wellbeing.

By integrating NATI principles with the practical and professional requirements of the qualification, the Diploma prepares learners to work with children, young people and families using a therapeutic, relationship-focused and trauma-informed approach, while maintaining the professional, legal and ethical responsibilities required within the sector.

The program is available to individual learners or to agencies wishing to upskill their workforce. The course bridges the gap between theory and practice to provide a hands-on, high-quality learning experience relevant to work practice.

Duration study load

The course runs for approximately 18 months. It is a self-paced program, so learners may take a little shorter or longer to complete all required work. Learners work sequentially through the modules and will work closely with their assessor to stay on track.

Delivery

The program is delivered through an online platform, Canvas (Instructure). All portfolio and assessment work is accessed and submitted through this portal. Alternatives are available for learners who are unable to work online or have connectivity problems.

Learners will have regular contact with their assessor throughout the course, including tutorial sessions at least once a month, depending on progress and support requirements.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this program. However, it is anticipated that learners are working in an appropriate industry, or have access to one, in order to complete the mandatory workplace tasks.

Potential learners will also complete a simple Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) task to identify if any support strategies are required.

Course features

SAL Consulting's Diploma incorporates Neurodevelopment, Attachment and Trauma Informed (NATI) principles, offering a unique approach to child, youth and family work. These principles are embedded across all Diploma subjects.

  • SAL Consulting is the only Registered Training Organisation in Australia that integrates the NATI approach across all of its services.
  • Accredited provider of the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT) as developed by Dr Bruce Perry at the Neurosequential Model Network (USA).
  • Over 20 years of experience providing customised support to people and organisations in the community, disability, health and youth sectors.
  • Delivered through the online platform Canvas (Instructure).
  • Regular monthly tutorial sessions with a dedicated assessor.
  • Learner support including resources in alternative formats, LLN support, assistive technology, and IT support.

Work placement

All learners need to demonstrate skills in a workplace or simulated environment. It is assumed all learners will have access to a suitable workplace. SAL Consulting do not provide external placement opportunities but can support a student to source their own placement if they are not currently employed.

Supplementary evidence from a third party, such as a workplace supervisor, is required to substantiate competency. SAL Consulting may also request direct contact with the workplace supervisor if needed to confirm details.

Recognition of prior learning

SAL Consulting offers Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for learners with existing workplace experience or prior qualifications. Your knowledge and skills can be mapped against individual units of competency in the Diploma, potentially reducing study time and load.

The RPL process requires:

  • Completion of a formal assessment process
  • Provision of evidence of current skills and knowledge
  • Participation in at least one assessment interview

Going through the RPL process does not guarantee success. The assessor will determine whether the evidence provided demonstrates competency in each unit.

Credit transfer may also be available if you have previously completed a subject identical to one in this program, potentially exempting you from the relevant assessment. Further details are available in the Learner Handbook.

Professional Recognition

This is a Nationally Recognised Training (NRT) qualification delivered by SAL Consulting, a Registered Training Organisation (RTO code: 91494). Full qualification details can be accessed at training.gov.au.

SAL Consulting is an accredited provider of the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT) as developed by Dr Bruce Perry at the Neurosequential Model Network (USA), and is a member of the Neuroleadership Institute.

Assessment

The Diploma program consists of eight modules. Each module includes comprehensive learning material, reflective questions, and formal assessment tasks. Assessment tasks are marked as either Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory.

Upon completion of all assessment tasks, the assessor will deem the learner either Competent or Not Yet Competent. Learners marked as Unsatisfactory or Not Yet Competent will be given the opportunity to resubmit their work.

Assessment questions are based on case studies, scenarios, and the learner's own workplace experience. Learners must demonstrate their experience through practical activities.

Learners must be deemed Competent in all 18 units of competency to receive the qualification.

Assessment conditions include:

  • Supplementary evidence from a third party (e.g. workplace supervisor) to substantiate competency.
  • Demonstration of skills in a workplace or simulated environment.
  • Use of specific resources such as policies and procedures, client information, individualised plans, case management plans, and links to service agencies.
  • Demonstration of particular interventions for specific client cohorts including child protection, behaviours of concern, and mental health wellbeing.

Testimonials

  • “The Diploma gave me a much deeper understanding of the children and young people I support. I particularly valued the focus on trauma, attachment and neurodevelopment, as it helped me look beyond behaviour and better understand what a young person may be communicating through their actions. The course was practical and relevant to the work I do every day, and I now feel much more confident in how I respond to children, young people and families.”

Diploma of Child, Youth & Family Intervention
  • "Whenever I was unsure about an assessment or needed help connecting the theory to my workplace experience, I felt comfortable asking questions and received practical, constructive guidance. Even though I was studying online, I never felt like I was doing it alone.”
