What is a government-funded course?
Both the government of Western Australia and the national government are looking to fill skills gaps and reduce unemployment by offering reduced VET fees and TAFE fees for eligible students in Perth and greater Western Australia – largely organised through the department of training and workforce development. These courses are designed for industries with high demand and low supply of workers.
If you’re an Australian citizen, you may be eligible to complete one of these skills programs. Courses are taught through registered training organisations (RTOs) and teach priority industry qualifications, or qualifications that need to be completed to fill skills gaps for Western Australian companies.
You can complete anything from a Certificate to a higher level qualification, such as at a Diploma level qualification through the initiative, although generally, the government funding is only available to those who are completing and learning local skills that are going to qualify them to work in the industry.
If you’re interested in enrolling in a training place that has government funding available, then the WA government has a few terms and conditions – you need to be an Australian citizen and have your primary place of residence within Western Australia, although each vocational education and training organisation may have different requirements for students.
You can study a range of courses with lower fees or funding through jobs and skills WA, possibly including:
- Health Care
- Information Technology
- Aged Care and Individual Support
- Early Childhood Education
- Building and Construction
How to study
As the federal and state government is keen to get jobseekers job-ready, most RTOs offer several study options, including full-time and part-time study loads, industry training courses, worker traineeships, online study and face-to-face learning. That means that whether you’re a new entrant to the industry or an existing worker looking to complete something like a Certificate III or Certificate IV in order to formalise your skills, there may well be a study option for you.
