What is nail technology?

Nail technology is the art and science of beautifying hands and feet. It includes services like manicures, pedicures, acrylic nails, builder gel, nail extensions, gel applications, nail art, and health-focused treatments. Nail technicians provide services to clients by combining creativity, hygiene practices, and technical skill to deliver results that are both stylish and safe.

Why study nail technology in the beauty industry?

Australia’s beauty industry continues to thrive, with the nail sector experiencing notable growth. In 2024, the beauty and personal care market was valued at AUD 16.20 billion, with projections indicating a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.5% from 2025 to 2034.

Nail technology is a pathway to a successful and creative career in the beauty industry. It can also be a lucrative career, offering both financial rewards and personal fulfillment. Studying nail technology equips you with the skills to work in salons, spas, resorts, or even run your own beauty business, including your own mobile business, and become your own boss. It’s a flexible, creative, and people-focused career that allows you to make others feel confident and polished, literally!

What will you learn?

Comprehensive courses in nail technology cover three core areas: technical skills, health and safety, and business operations. Students will learn to provide manicure and pedicure services, apply nail art techniques, and use electric nail file equipment. Nail enhancements training includes application and safe removal of acrylics, gels, and dip powder systems.

  • Manicure and Pedicure Techniques – Nail shaping, cuticle care, exfoliation, and massage.
  • Application of Nail Enhancements –Including acrylic nail enhancements, gel, SNS (dip powder), and dip powder nail enhancements, with a focus on both application and safe removal.
  • Nail Art and Design – Techniques for custom nail styling and creative finishes, including advanced techniques such as Russian manicures and Builder Gel In A Bottle (BIAB).
  • Client Communication and Service – Professional conduct, consultation, and customer care.
  • Infection Control, Health and Work Practices, and Workplace Safety – Adherence to safe hygiene, health and work practices, and WHS standards in salon environments to minimize risks to clients and staff.
  • Practical Skills Using Electrical Equipment – Operation of electrical equipment for nail services, including electric nail file equipment for manicures, pedicures, and nail art.

Most courses include supervised practical sessions or salon-based work placements to develop real-world confidence and competence. Successful completion of each module is required before progressing to subsequent training or work placement activities, ensuring students achieve essential milestones throughout the course.
