How to Become a Nail Technician

Interested in nail art, but you’re not sure where to begin?
Here’s a guide to becoming a nail technician to clear up any queries you may have.

What is a Nail Technician?

Nail technology is a facet of beauty therapy, consisting of decorating and shaping toenails and fingernails. Their services include manicures, pedicures, applying artificial nails, and providing light skincare around the cuticles. A qualified nail technician keeps up to date with new trends and products, is friendly and open with their client, and can focus on intricate details to meet their desires.

The job outlook looks bright for nail technicians, with an expected

job growth in the next five years.

Keep in mind that there are safety risks for nail technicians, such as a lot of repetitive movement, sitting for long periods, and exposure to chemicals. It’s essential to counter these hazards by scheduling regular breaks and adhering to industry-standard health and safety regulations. Also, you might not get along with every client you come across.

That’s why learning to negotiate and reassure customers is such an essential skill in this area – and the beauty industry as a whole. On the other hand, many who provide nail services find that they have created long-lasting friendships with their coworkers and their clients. If you love to talk to people and express your creativity, this is undoubtedly an industry you should look into.

Nail Technician Responsibilities and Duties

  • Customer service skills — show an interest in their clients
  • Good attention to detail
  • Loves to express creativity
  • No allergies or sensitivity to the products used
  • A strong understanding of safe hygiene standards
  • Strong knowledge of nail products and their ingredients
  • Dextrous
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Adaptable
  • Time management — scheduling in appointments to avoid wait times
  • Patience
  • Practises craft continuously
  • Knows how to multitask

Education & Work Experience For A Prospective Nail Technician

While you can work as a nail technician without any formal education, you’re more likely to find a job with a proper qualification. The majority of nail technicians have either an Advanced Diploma or a Certificate III/IV in beauty. The entry requirements to enroll generally include you having at least completed year 12 or a Certificate IV, and be at least 17.

For nail technician courses specifically, a standard certification is Certificate III in Nail Technology. You’ll not only learn about how to provide manicure and pedicure services but also how to establish and maintain a small business. Another popular qualification is the Diploma of Beauty Therapy. While not entirely focused on nail technology, it will teach you the fundamentals of beauty therapy at a senior level within a year.

Generally, you don’t need to look for work experience since many of these qualifications include placements anyway.

If you’re looking to study nail technology online, you may consider the Advanced Nails Certificate, an online course that can be completed in approximately 46 weeks full time. You’ll complete assessments with the nail kit provided and receive comprehensive feedback by professionals. Don’t worry if you’re new to nail application as a whole; there are trainers out there who will take you through the process step by step.
