What is Skills Checkpoint for Older Workers?
Skills Checkpoint for Older Workers assists Australians over 40 in retraining and upskilling so they can advance in their professions or find new jobs.
This programme is run by the Australian Government’s Department of Education, Skills, and Employment. It is intended for senior workers who need to upgrade their abilities.
The following individualised support services are available:
• Career assessment
• Consultations with a trained advisor for career guidance
• Career plan and suggestions for skill development
• Training grants of up to $2,200 (covering 50-75% of course cost)

What courses does Skills Checkpoint funding subsidise?
Vocational courses like Certificate IIIs and Diplomas are financially supported by Skills Checkpoint. Courses are delivered by VERTO in Western Australia.
Depending on the course, the subsidy varies:
• 50% of the cost of tuition for courses that improve career prospects
• 75% of the cost of tuition for courses related to a skill on the National Skills Commission’s Skills Priority List.
Some examples of jobs on the Skills Priority List with shortages and projected demand:

• Library Assistant
• Legal Executive
Am I eligible for the Skills Checkpoint program?
Each year, there are limited places available. The number of available spots doubled beginning in January 2022, and the eligibility criteria broadened.
To satisfy the new criteria, you must be:
• 40 years or older
• a permanent resident or citizen of Australia
• Either:
• Employed but in danger of losing your job
• Recently out of work (within 12 months)
• Not taking part in an Australian Government job services program.
