What is a Certificate III course?

A certificate III course in Victoria aims to create work-ready students who understand all the required theory to work in their chosen industry. Students complete a series of core units and elective units, as well as tests, quizzes and other assessment methods. Generally, a Certificate III is delivered through TAFE or another registered training organisation (RTO). Something like a first-aid certificate may be included in your study – a course in something like early childhood education and care is likely to include it as a core unit. Still, it’s mostly dependent on the subject matter. Many who complete a Certificate III may go on to an Australian Certificate IV or other higher qualification.
On the successful completion of your Certificate III, you’ll have a qualification that indicates to employers that you’re ready to start work at an entry-level.
You can complete the Certificate III of your choice in a variety of subjects or industries, including:

  • Community services
  • Business administration and business management
  • Aged care
  • Bookkeeping or accounting
  • Child care and early childhood education
  • And many more!

Whether you’re looking to complete a Certificate III in individual support (Ageing) or something that will let you go on to complete your diploma of early childhood education, there’s a Certificate III course for you!

How to study

Many RTOs offer a variety of study options for students, with start dates throughout the year for Victorian TAFE. Several organisations offer both online courses and face to face learning methods so that you can study whichever way suits you best.
Some schools may also have recognition of prior learning (RPL) for specific courses, so if you’ve previously completed study or worked in the area, you may be able to use it towards meeting entry requirements for your chosen course. Otherwise, generally, the entry requirements for a certificate III revolve around basic literacy and numeracy skills.
You also may have the option of learning part-time, so that if you have other commitments or the course fees would suit you better spread out, you can do so with the majority of courses. Student services are equally useful for all students, whether learning online, part-time or full time.

International students should enquire with CRICOS before enrolling in a course.
