FAQs
What skills do you need for aged care?
Industry Leader Answer
In order to work in aged care, you must first have some sort of caring experience, whether that be through a TAFE course or prior experience in an aged care facility.
It’s not always an easy job and it can be very emotionally draining at times so you need to be quite strong-willed. You also must have the ability to multi-task, people can be pulling you at all ends so you need to be able to jump from one task to another while keeping a level head.
You also need to be a good listener and up for a good chat, you may be the only person they speak to for the week so it’s very important that you’re there to add some light to their lives. It can be incredibly rewarding knowing you’ve made a difference in someone’s life just by being there for them.
It also goes without saying you must have respect for the elderly in a position like this. They’re in the last moments of their lives so being respectful of their decisions and behaviour is paramount.
