Government funding for vocational and TAFE courses in Hobart and Tasmania
There are two different government funding schemes in Tasmania. The Rapid Response Skills Initiative (RRSI) offers training subsidies to Tasmanians who have lost employment due to COVID-19. To support older workers in retraining or upskilling, Skills Checkpoint offers tailored coaching, counselling, and subsidised training to support older workers in retraining or upskilling.
Both TasTAFE and authorised Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) may offer funded courses. The government pays the course fee to the training provider upon enrolment. Learners might still need to pay for some facilities and services, as well as textbooks and other study materials – this varies across courses and providers.
Funding for vocational education and training is available for accredited short courses (also known as skill sets) and nationally recognised qualifications, ranging from courses at the certificate II level for basic skills to advanced diplomas. Areas with funded qualifications range from healthcare and community services to information technology. Both in-person and online learning are offered, depending on the nature of the course.
All funding programs require that you live and work in Tasmania and be one of the following:
• Australian citizen
• Permanent resident
• New Zealand citizen
• Eligible visa holder
The extra requirements for each program are listed on each funding scheme’s page. To confirm your eligibility, enquire about a course with a provider.
