A real estate career is an exciting pathway that involves hard work and a strong work ethic. Just like any position, there are skill sets you’ll need to have if you want to excel in this area. If you’d like to join the ranks of great agents, here are seven excellent qualities that you should have.
A real estate agent shouldn’t take any part of their job lying down! Clients expect you to be able to negotiate and close a deal promptly. You can’t do it if you’re not persistent. You should always be on the hunt for leads, and when they do find one, they hold on tight, following up with potential investors once they have seen the house.
2. An Outgoing Personality
Since you’re going to be interacting with people regularly, you have to be friendly and honest, no matter who they are. You don’t have to keep your mind on the job constantly; small talk and asking questions outside of real estate helps build that connection. Don’t be afraid to learn more about your clients.
You’ll have to have a high emotional intelligence to identify what exactly a potential buyer is feeling, and understand why they are feeling this way. Once you know, you can devise an appropriate empathetic response. A home buyer would prefer that kind of response rather than something that’s more aggressive.
3. Good Attention to Detail
In real estate, attention to detail refers to paying attention to your client’s needs. You’ll need to ask them specific questions about what they’re after. For example, a young family might want to live in a quiet part of the neighbourhood.
You can inform them of any details that they might miss. In other words, you should be well organised in regards to contracts and time management.
You should also pay attention to how you present yourself. Ensure that you’re always professionally dressed, clean, and groomed to a standard that matches your attitude.
4. Great Communication Skills
Successful real estate agents are those who follow up with their client on a regular basis, whether it be through phone calls, emails or text messages. They will inform their client about how they will keep contact with them during the initial appointments. Even if it’s the tiniest piece of information, you should always convey this with your client. Be careful, though – there’s a fine line between badgering your client and maintaining a connection with them, so make sure you don’t overdo it.
It’s not just for their benefit, it’s for yours as well. Communicating regularly outside of your appointments is a great way to build rapport.
5. Keen Interest in Research
Your clients would expect you to know the local housing prices and what the neighbourhood is like. Most home buyers would like to be informed on what is available to them in this neighbourhood, such as restaurants, schools, work, along with whether or not it’s a safe place to live.
The market is only one of the many topics you have to keep up to date with. You might have gotten your qualifications in real estate but that doesn’t mean you’ve learnt everything that you need to learn. You should be open to continuing education while on the job.
6. High Energy
Along with having an outgoing personality, you should also show your enthusiasm for real estate. If you want to distinguish yourself from other real estate agents, showing just how passionate you are will reel clients in. Generally speaking, the more passionate you are about something, the more you’ll put in the effort.
7. A Strong Understanding of Technology
Knowing the ins and outs of the relevant technology is crucial. Certain software can help refine your research into accurate data, such as occupancy rates, return on investment, price-to-rent ratio and cash on cash return.
Not only that, but most potential buyers are going to look online to find information on retail, so having a strong grasp on how to advertise homes online has become another essential part of the job.
Practice Makes Perfect
Remember that while having these qualities is obviously a plus, it doesn’t mean you can’t succeed in the real estate business if you don’t have them, especially if you’re just starting out. Just because, for example, not particularly extroverted, that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to do a good job. The more you practice, the closer you’ll be to the ideal realtor.
