Government Funded Courses Victoria

In Victoria, Government Financial Support is available to students who qualify for a subsidy. These Government-subsidised prospects are offered by training providers and RTOs who have a set agreement with the Vic Government, that allows them to offer government subsidised courses. This means that the government will cover some or all of the costs for a course, for eligible students.

Victorian Government Funded Courses Eligibility

Your eligibility to take part in government funded courses in Victoria is subject to many considerations – your qualification will be established by your training provider on enrollment in a specific course.

Some things you need to think about prior to your application for government funding training:

  • You will need to be an Australian citizen; or
  • A holder of a permanent visa; or
  • A New Zealand citizen

  • You are limited to involvement in two government subsidised courses in one year (this includes courses found on the approved Foundation Skills List). This maximum does not involve pre-apprenticeships.

  • You are able to study up to two government subsidised courses at one time (this again includes courses on the approved Foundation Skills List).

  • You may not begin more than two government funded courses at equal qualification. This maximum is not inclusive of the courses found on the Foundation Skills List, Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)/Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) or to students who have decided to begin training again of equal qualification level (at the same or a different provider).

What is VET student loans?

VET Student Loans is an Australian Government loan scheme for the TAFE and Training sector.

VET Student Loans will cover all or a portion of the course costs via a student loan. This can then be paid off by the student once they reach a certain level of income.

The VET Student Loans scheme is available at all Registered Training Organisations that have been given authorisation by the Australian Government.

Centrelink Assistance

Centrelink offers a wide range of financial assistance and Centrelink funded courses to students who are carrying out further study. This eligibility depends on a variety of factors. Some of these financial assistance options are:

  • Youth Allowance for students and apprentices
  • Austudy
  • ABSTUDY
  • Assistance for Isolated Children
  • Education Entry Payment
  • Pensioner Education Supplement
  • Student Start-up Loan
  • Fares Allowance

Assistance From Training Providers

Selected training providers do offer financial assistance for the payment for tuition fees, books and other costs associated with the course. Speak directly with your provider to find out more information.

Apprenticeship and Trainee Assistance

The Victorian government understands the financial hardships that some Australian Apprentices are confronted with when first entering the workforce. Depending on factors such as your apprenticeship and current situation, you may be eligible for financial support. These options are:

  • Trade Support Loans
  • Living Away from Home Allowance
  • User Choice
  • Youth Allowance and ABSTUDY
  • Trade Apprentice Registration Discount

Government funded training is also available to a range of study types. As online study in Victoria is becoming increasingly popular, subsidisation is applicable to online government courses, along with government funded short courses in Victoria.

Fully Funded Government Subsidised Courses

As announced in the Victorian State Budget 2018-19, the Victorian Government is offering a Free TAFE Scheme for selected courses that will assist in filling industry gaps in Victoria. This free online courses Victoria scheme will be effective from the 1st of January 2019.
