In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, pursuing a career in information technology (IT) is not only promising but also essential. As industries become increasingly reliant on digital solutions, the demand for skilled IT professionals continues to rise.

If you’re considering entering the IT field or looking to advance your existing career, you’re in the right place. This guide gives you information about different IT careers, in-demand skills, and promising fields for the future.

Is IT in demand?

The simple answer is yes. The Jobs & Skills Department recently published its quarterly analysis highlighting the industries that are experiencing the biggest skills shortages in Australia, and the tech industry is one of them.

According to the report, there’s been a 15% decrease in the fill rate of IT jobs and a 4.3% decrease in qualified applicants per vacancy, quarter on quarter. Due to this skills shortage, it’s a great time for beginners to invest in their technical skills as there are plenty of job opportunities available.

What is the career path for someone in IT?

The IT industry offers a diverse range of career paths, catering to individuals with varying skill sets and interests. From coding and programming to cyber security and data analysis, there’s a niche for everyone. Here’s a general outline of the career path:

1. Entry-level positions

Your journey often begins with roles like IT support specialist or help desk technician. These positions help you understand the basics of IT operations and provide valuable hands-on experience in troubleshooting and customer support.

To start in these roles, you can consider courses such as:

  • Certificate III in Information Technology
  • Certificate IV in Information Technology
  • Diploma of Information Technology

2. Specialisation

As you gain more knowledge and skills you might choose a specialisation. For example, becoming a software developer involves creating, testing, and maintaining software applications. On the other hand, network administrators manage an organisation’s IT network infrastructure. Here are some areas you can specialise in:

  • Programming
  • Cloud computing
  • Cyber security
  • Web development
  • Software
  • Systems administration
  • Data science
  • Coding

3. Mid-level roles

With experience, you can transition into roles like systems analyst, where you evaluate and improve IT systems for efficiency. Another option is becoming an IT project manager who’s responsible for overseeing the successful completion of IT projects within budget and timeline constraints. Here are some of the mid-level roles available in the IT sector:

  • IT project manager
  • Systems analyst
  • Database administrator
  • Software developer
  • Web developer
  • Cyber security analyst
  • Information security analyst
  • Data analyst

4. Senior-level and leadership positions

After years of experience, you can advance into roles such as IT manager or chief information officer (CIO). These positions involve strategic planning, decision-making, and overseeing the entire IT department. Whilst years of experience are usually enough to succeed in these roles, continuous upskilling can get you there quicker. If you need to bridge a gap, courses like an Advanced Diploma of Information Technology can the skills required for these roles. Or, if you need to upskill in the area of leadership and management, there are a variety of courses to choose from.

What is a good IT career?

In the realm of IT, a “good” career is one that aligns with your skills, interests, and goals. However, some IT careers tend to stand out due to their growth potential and impact.

1. Cyber security specialist

In an age of increasing cyber threats, cyber security is crucial. Cyber security analysts and engineers protect systems, networks, and data from cyber attacks. They assess vulnerabilities, implement security measures, and respond to incidents. Consider courses such as Certificate IV in Cyber Security or Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) for a career in cyber security.

2. Software developer

Software developers create applications that power our digital world. They code, test, and refine software to meet user needs. As technology continues to advance, software development remains an evergreen IT career. To become a software developer, courses like Diploma of Software Development or Bachelor of Computer Science can provide a strong foundation.

3. Cloud computing expert

With the rise of cloud technology, businesses are moving their operations to the cloud. Cloud computing experts manage and optimise cloud infrastructures, enabling seamless data storage and accessibility. Consider courses like Certificate IV in Cloud Computing or Amazon Web Services (AWS) for a career in cloud computing.

4. Data analyst

Data is the new gold, and data analysts extract valuable insights from vast datasets. They use advanced analytics to make informed business decisions and identify trends, helping organisations stay competitive. Courses like Diploma of Data Science or Master of Data Science teaches you the necessary skills for a data science career.

What skills are most in demand in IT?

As the IT landscape evolves, certain skills have become especially sought after:

1. Programming languages

Proficiency in languages like Python, Java, and JavaScript is crucial for developers, programmers, and other IT professionals. These languages power applications, websites, and software solutions.

2. Cyber security expertise

In a digital world, protecting data is paramount. Cyber security skills, including ethical hacking and network security, are in high demand due to the rise in cyber attacks.

3. Cloud computing skills

As businesses migrate to the cloud, experts who understand cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud are indispensable.

4. Data analysis

The ability to gather insights from data is invaluable. Data analysis skills, including data visualisation and statistical analysis, are highly sought after by organisations.

5. Soft skills

Effective communication, problem-solving, and adaptability are essential in IT. Soft skills enhance collaboration and contribute to overall project success.

Which field is best in the future in IT?

Predicting the future of IT is challenging, but several fields show great promise:

1. Artificial intelligence (AI)

AI and machine learning are revolutionising industries. IT professionals with expertise in AI can develop intelligent systems, automate processes, and drive innovation.

2. Internet of Things (IoT)

IoT connects devices to the internet, enabling data exchange. IT experts in IoT can create smart solutions for homes, industries, and cities.

3. Cyber security

As technology advances, so do cyber threats. Cyber security professionals will continue to be in high demand to safeguard data and privacy.

4. Big data and analytics

The importance of data-driven decision-making will grow. Experts who can manage and analyse vast amounts of data will remain crucial to organisations.
