What is TAFE?

TAFE in Australia is a system of further education designed to create job-ready students. TAFE is available all over the country, in every major city and town, including Brisbane, Fraser Island and the Fraser Coast, Gympie and the Sunshine Coast. 

In Hervey Bay there are heaps of available courses, helped along by the TAFE Queensland Hervey Bay campus.

Entry requirements are different for TAFE than for higher education – usually, a Certificate II in another field, a completed year 10 in high school or experience in the field is enough to qualify you for the course. 

International students should check with both CRICOS and the training provider to ensure that they’re eligible for the course.

Funding for TAFE courses

TAFE Queensland offers subsidies for students doing priority training courses or traineeships. Some of the subsidised areas may include:

  • Hairdressing and Beauty

  • Child Care
  • Nursing and Aged Care
  • Building and Construction
  • Community Services 
  • Information Technology and Digital Media

 

There are many other additional TAFE courses in Hervey Bay. A registered training organisation may also have payment plans and other payment options available.

 

How to study TAFE courses in Queensland:

You can study TAFE courses in QLD in several different ways, depending on what suits you best and the qualification level. The three main ways to study TAFE courses are:

  1. Online: An online course is taught entirely via distance learning, which means that you can study an Australian course from anywhere, at any time. Provided you have the English language skills to be able to complete the assessments, these courses are open to everyone.
  2. In-person: Face to face learning is typical for apprenticeships and traineeships, or other, hands-on roles like flower arranging. Usually, in-person courses are taught at a training centre or in the field, which is accessible in Hervey Bay because of the Hervey Bay TAFE campus.
  3. Blended: Blended learning involves a mix of both in-person and online learning. You may be able to study online but be required to travel to either the Hervey Bay TAFE campus or further to Bundaberg, or another Queensland location to complete assessments.

How you study will largely depend on which course you do – if you’re considering a course based in Wide Bay Burnett or a Certificate III in individual support on the East coast or in Wide Bay, blended learning may be your only option. 

Alternatively, if you own a small business and are trying to get your advanced diploma in bookkeeping, that’s one of many short courses that could be done entirely online, especially for courses based in Melbourne!
