Plants are blooming with life… and so is the horticulture industry.
Pursuing a new career can seem daunting, especially if you’re unsure what that is yet. There’s a number of deciding factors that go into picking a new career path, such as what you’re good at and also what you’ve studied. But for Meg, the deciding factor was what she loved doing most.
Before pursuing a career change, consider upskilling or undertaking study — it may be all you need to foray into the job you love.
What is Horticulture?
Horticulture definition: “the art or practice of garden cultivation and management.” The role requires a deep knowledge of plant species, garden care, irrigation, and pests and diseases.
Horticulture Australia is a huge industry. There are over 500 jobs available and a strong growth outlook for horticulture. If you thrive in a role that requires being meticulous and knowledgeable about plants and plant care, horticulture could be the role for you.

CERES
Centre for Education and Research in Environmental Strategies.
CERES is an award-winning, not-for-profit organisation based in East Brunswick in Melbourne. Providing the Melbourne community with environmental education programs, urban agriculture projects, green technology demonstrations, and numerous social enterprises.
Their aim is to provide the community with a place where they can share ideas about living sustainably together.
Through their agricultural projects and community farms, CERES has won numerous awards including the United Nations Association of Australia award for Best Community Based Environmental Project or Initiative.”
Meg’s Story
Meg has spent the past 10 years working in the horticulture industry. From originally completing an Arts degree majoring in Linguistics to studying horticulture, it was a huge change in career choice for Meg.
Deciding to go back to study at 30, Meg was unsure what career path to take. She thought long and hard about what interested her the most and working with plants and gardening was something she always loved.
Having grown up in a family of keen gardeners, it just seemed natural for her to go into horticulture. Getting a job at CERES, she slowly worked her way up to become Area Manager of the Honey Lane farm space where she runs propagation enterprise.
Working in a community organisation is what Meg loves most about her job because she gets to work with people every day.

About the Role
Meg’s role incorporates a whole lot more than just planting seeds. In her role, she must be extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of plants and plant care. She also must be prepared to work outside all day no matter what.
