Are you passionate about helping others? Do you want to make the world a better place? Community services workers improve lives by working directly with people, or indirectly by working in the organisations that support them.

By completing a nationally-recognised community service course, you can demonstrate that you have the right skills and abilities and that you’re ready for the job.

Job prospects

  • According to the Department of Employment’s Job Outlook website, Community Services is a large occupation, with 52,300 workers and very strong predicted growth of 40,000 job openings in the next five years. Job prospects are excellent for major cities. Workers are also in demand in rural and regional areas. Victoria has a share of 23.1% of all workers compared to 25.5% of all occupations, coming in second nationally.

What do Community Services Workers do?

  • Listening to clients and assessing their needs and difficulties
  • Monitoring and reporting on the progress of clients
  • Referring clients to agencies that can provide additional help
  • Evaluating community need and resources for health, welfare, housing, employment, training and other facilities and services
  • Liaising with community groups, welfare agencies, government bodies and private businesses about community issues and promoting awareness of community resources and services
  • Supporting families and providing education and care for children and disabled persons in adult service units, group housing and government institutions
  • Supervising offenders on probation and parole
  • Assisting young people to solve social, emotional and financial problems
  • Preparing submissions for funding and resources, and reports to government bodies and other agencies

Who employs community services workers?

Many workers choose to work in non-profit organisations that work directly in the community. Others prefer the security of a government job, usually providing human services. The private sector employs workers in places like community development organisations, welfare centres, social enterprises, neighbourhood houses, emergency relief agencies, home and community care organisations, and residential care facilities.

Jobs

Some of the job titles in the community services industry are:

  • Alcohol and Drug Officer
  • Child Protection Officer
  • Community Development Officer
  • Community Support Worker
  • Counsellor
  • Crisis Intervention Worker
  • Disability Services Officer
  • Juvenile Justice Officer
  • Multicultural Support Officer
  • Residential Care Officer
  • Welfare Worker
  • Youth Worker
  • Family Support Worker
  • Parole or Probation Officer
  • Residential Care Officer

Career pathways

Community services workers usually need either a Diploma, an Advanced Diploma or an Associate Degree to work in the field, or 3 years of relevant experience. Around 2 out of 5 workers hold a Bachelor degree or Post-Graduate Diploma, the most common being the Bachelor of Human Services and the Bachelor of Social Science.

Another 2 of 5 hold a Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification. The most common of these is a Diploma of Community Services Work, though many other qualifications target more specific parts of the sector such as drug and alcohol support services.

Community Services Courses Online

Experience in the community services field is a crucial part of training, and even courses which are otherwise wholly online will have a placement component of 400 hours. An in-person or blended approach, with a little of both, could also work well if you prefer to set your own pace or study remotely.

Is Community Services work right for you?

Excellent people skills are essential for this profession, as are organizational and planning abilities. Just as critical, however, is an understanding of the inequalities of society and a desire to change things for the better. Does this sound like you? If it does, a career in community services could be a great fit.
