What is The Big Five Personality Test?

The Big Five Personality Test is a well-respected psychological assessment which measures give key personality factors on a sliding scale. It’s the only personality test backed by science and used in modern personality psychology.

Psychologists have used the five-factor model of personality in the field of personality psychology for many years. It is also called the Big Five Inventory, or the OCEAN personality test. Though many researchers collaborated on the model, Lew Goldberg was the first to use the term ‘Big Five’ in 1981.

Since then, the Big Five has shown its ability to predict how a person will behave in social situations. It can also reliably predict job performance. This success has led many companies and organisations to use the test when hiring new employees.

What are The Big Five Personality Traits?

Unlike most personality assessments, the Big Five doesn’t give you a label. There are as many personality types as there are people, and putting you into a box doesn’t always help you understand yourself.

Instead, you get an overview of how you score on five dimensions of personality.

Psychologists suggest

0%

of differences in performance ability are directly associated with the big five personality dimensions

  • Openness to Experience

A high score means you are curious and inventive, whereas a low score means that you’re cautious and consistent. Jobs for Open people.

  • Conscientiousness

A high score means you’re efficient and organised, whereas a low score means you’re easygoing and perhaps careless. Jobs for Conscientious people.

  • Extraversion

A high score means you’re outgoing and energetic, whereas a low score means you’re more solitary and reserved. Jobs for Extraverted people.

  • Agreeableness

A high score means you’re friendly and compassionate, whereas a low score means you’re more detached and uncooperative. Jobs for Agreeable people.

  • Neuroticism

A high score means you are more sensitive and nervous, whereas a low score means you’re more confident and secure. Jobs for neurotic people.

The Big Five can help you to understand your own personality traits in terms of how others see you. It can even help you to choose a compatible career, since certain qualities are required for particular jobs.

Once you’ve discovered your personality profile, you can combine that with your strengths and interests. Choosing a job aligned with your personality, strengths and interests can lead you to true satisfaction in your career.

As an example, the performance in an industry area such as Health Work generally requires workers to be friendly and have a kind and caring nature. As this quality aligns with the personality trait ‘Agreeableness’, recruiters would conduct the Big-Five Personality Test to look specifically for this result in a candidate.
